Pearson eCollege Commitment to Accessibility

Pearson eCollege supports the goal of making content and technologies widely accessible for all educational users. In conjunction with assistive technologies, such as Jaws™ and Windows-Eyes™, the Pearson LearningStudio system is capable of delivering online learning to students with disabilities.

To deliver online learning to disabled users, Pearson offers accessible solutions that conform to international Web content accessibility guidelines from the World Wide Web Consortium, specifically Web Content Accessibility Guidelines Version 2.0 (WCAG 2.0) at Level AA. Pearson is confident in our ability to make learning available to all users through our products, evaluation processes, user support and consulting services.

Pearson regularly reviews and addresses the accessibility of our learning platform. This review process includes guidelines that conform to current US Federal Government Section 508 Standards, specifically Web-based intranet and internet information and applications referenced in section 1194.22. Pearson continues to make significant and ongoing investments in the usability and accessibility of its solution, directly committing research and development resources to this compliance.

If product functionality is found to be incompatible with accessibility as defined within international Web content accessibility guidelines, it will be evaluated and every effort will be made to resolve the finding. Such evaluation will be made within the context of overall product priorities, timing and cost. To ensure continued compliance, we have also implemented formal development procedures.

In addition, Pearson’s Technical Help Desk team is trained in the use of popular assistive technologies. Pearson course development consultants and instructional designers are trained to design, build, audit and modify course content for accessibility. These consultants and designers provide assistance to Pearson educational partners to deliver accessible courses to their students.

To support the use and propagation of accessible content, Pearson provides templates for building course content that can be accessed by all users. These templates can be based on CSS or HTML formats, enabling the Pearson LearningStudio system to easily generate Web accessible content.
